Powertrain

The powertrain subsystem covers a range of projects, including steering geometry, brakes, suspension, and drivetrain. Our goal is to minimize efficiency losses throughout the entire vehicle, paying close attention to the efficiency of the motor, drivetrain, and even the tires. We also must also consider design requirements, manufacturing abilities, and safety, all while keeping the vehicle as light as possible.

Current powertrain projects include designing a two-stage chain driven transmission, developing a lightweight and efficient battery, and optimizing components for strength and weight goals. We are using Solidworks’ simulation package for topology optimization and static analysis. Every component of our powertrain needs to meet a specified safety factor, but must not be any heavier than necessary.Â
