2006 SAE Supermileage Competition -- Race Day, Pt. I

The proving grounds opened up early on race day at 8am, with runs beginning promptly at 9am. Teams have as many chances as they can fit in the day with their best extrapolated mileage being their score. After a couple quick jobs to get the car race ready, it was on to the track. We got two attempts in during the morning with Thomas at the helm. A DNF (Did Not Finish) started the day after a thrown chain, but the 2nd run was completed with a mileage right about 600 mpg.

The competition banner marks the starting line on the track.

Richard readies the brake after installing the race wheels.

Dylan and Sarah, with Mike, tighten the chains and belts of the CVT.

Tape isn't just for the car as Thomas electrical tapes the headset to his hear to keep it in place inside the helmet.
