2006 SAE Supermileage Competition -- Tech Day

For the first time in a couple years, we passed tech on the first day. The judges did not find anything big wrong during tech, and almost everything was as expected. However, a hidden rule change made the helmet Jason spent so many hours painting unusable. Having passed tech early, we were actually able to get some testing and tuning in. Add to this that this years tech was about twenty degrees cooler and less humid than last year, day one of the competition was eminently bearable.

Our encampment at the proving grounds.

Richard tightens up the CVT support cables.

Keeping the top fairing in the shade before going off to tech. The top fairing experienced some meltage from heat on the trip out.

The pit cart makes its debut.

Jon pulls up the slack on the restraints.

Thomas in the car during tech.

Dylan sets the steering column as Jon and Jason get ready to put the top fairing on.

The turning radius test of the dynamic portion of tech.

Timer waits for the start of the brake test, where yes, everything went just perfectly. No crashes here...

Andrew C managed to get the car cart stuck in the truck torture track.

Getting some testing in after tech.

Jon gets strapped in during testing. Everything went well, minus the brake falling out. (In hindsight, perhaps this was a sign.)

Richard starts making the race wheels the night before the race.

Jason and Andrew D lay out where the decals are going to go.

Jon cuts out some sponsor decals.

Andrew D, Thomas, and Jason try to get the difficult script Cal logo onto the car.

Car is ready to go.
